"My name is Katie Reints, I live in Parkersburg, Iowa with my teenage sons and my husband of 19 years. I work full-time outside of the home, and I am a photographer. I have always had the desire to help those in need and I am blessed with the capability to bring people together to meet those needs. I grew up with parents that led by example and had a front-row seat to what it means to give of yourself.
7 years ago I started The Power of 50 as a way to meet the needs of a giving opportunity that I had literally dreamed about for a couple of decades. Dozens of my friends and family stepped up to help me with this idea and it quickly became apparent that I lived in a community of GIVERS.
I was told recently that my "superpower" is getting things done... Seeing a need, and meeting it quickly. All that means is that I am well connected to the givers and the people that care about others. In short - my superpower is The Power of 50.
The base idea of the Power of 50 is simple. Keep your heart open to the needs of fellow community members. No more than once a month we do a collection for a need in the community. In the recent past, it has always been a family in need due to illness, or tragedy. When these situations present themselves, we collect donations for a week and then close the "give".
A recent twist is this...
Smaller, more urgent needs can be met with the help of a few of us. It was brought to my attention that there are still children and teens in foster care - or recently aged out of foster care- that just do not get their needs met. It is our goal to help meet those needs and support the case workers that are in the trenches every day."
TESTIMONIALS:
"I was made aware of your group in December when a foster parent I’ve worked with for many years contacted me to see if there were any teens in foster care who have limited support and could benefit from being adopted for Christmas by a local group I hadn’t heard of before. I went through the list of teens in care and came up with 9 who have very limited informal support and provided their information to Katie along with some “Wishlist” items. Within days Katie contacted me and indicated Power of 50 was able to purchase everything on each of the teen’s list as well as additional items. The gifts were delivered to everyone prior to Christmas. They were all very grateful for the gifts they were given. Each of them was amazed with the generosity of the Power of 50. Without this group adopting these youth for Christmas they would not have had much of anything in the way of gifts. Because of this group supporting these young people they were able to see they are not forgotten, and people do care about them.
I have worked for Health and Human Services for 20 years, 14 years as a Social Work Case Manager and 6 years as the Transition Planning Specialist. I was blown away by the generous gift of gift cards from Power 50 that were given to me. Thank you so much for supporting youth in foster care throughout the Northern Service Area, your generosity is greatly appreciated!!!"

"As a giver- being able to give something- items, money, gift cards, prayers, etc. means giving that person a sense of calm in whatever storm they are living in. I hope that by me giving what little or big I can give means that the recipient is able to take a breath and not feel so overwhelmed. As a recipient the donations given while Caia was in the hospital meant Aaron and I got to both be in Iowa City with Caia without having to worry about us both not getting paid, Aaron and the kids being able to get hotel rooms to visit, dinners for Aaron and the kids and fuel driving to and from IC being taken care of. We can’t express enough how much those donations did for our family- giving us the space to worry about Caia without having to worry about how we were going to make it through the driving back and forth, getting hotels, both being able to miss work unpaid… we are forever grateful!"

"Our granddaughter's family was a recipient when she was diagnosed/fighting cancer. The kindness and generosity did not go unnoticed and was greatly appreciated at such a difficult time! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! "How do we change the world? One random act of kindness at a time."

"I was an anonymous recipient after my colon exploded and our lives got turned upside down. The extra money helped immensely with all the added expenses of a long hospital stay. The generosity was truly heartwarming."

"As a giver…at Christmas I was blown away with the response of the power of 50 to help the teens in our community that may feel unseen and unloved at times KNOW that they are seen and loved and so many caring about them and the hard place they find themselves. The power of 50 didn’t just serve the teens but the case workers who have worked for years in a difficult, thankless environment…and they were told they are making a difference and there are those that are thankful they do what they do day after day as they wade through heartbreaking and sometimes unimaginable cases."

"Our family was the recipient a few years ago when we lost our home. The generosity was so appreciated!"

"Being a member of this group is just one way I enjoy giving back- whether through money or items- hard times happen to good people. Communities that rally around people for no other reason than to see them succeed really make a long term impact. Through giving I am hopeful that others when their situations even out months or years down the line they will do the same for another person in their community and the love will continue to grow. The power of 50 is powerful and meets needs with social media and it is just beautiful what a group of likeminded individuals can do when asked."

"October 7th/8th 2021 was possibly the worst, scariest day of our parenting lives. We learned River had suffered an ischemic stroke and we were off to Iowa city by ambulance for the unknown. The next day once people learned and small-town word traveled fast, someone had reached out to the group because myself and Brandon would stay in Iowa city as long as needed, while my mom stayed home with our daughters. The group raised and sent money which helped with food, gas, bills and other expenses. Without the help of the Power of 50, we would have had the finances to worry about on top of just trying to get through the situation as a family. To this day we are grateful and will never forget how this helped our family in a time of unknown."
